Author Spotlight: Meet Kate Moseman
Recently I asked readers what you thought about the up and coming genre of Paranormal Women's Fiction, and I can report back that the comments were resoundingly in favor of it. Which is great news, because this week I had a chance to interview Kate Moseman, who is the author of Silver Spells, the first book in the delightful Midlife Elementals series.
Your main character, Luella, is a new witch whose powers come on her suddenly, and the possibilities for humor are nearly endless. What part of Silver Spells was the most fun to write?
My favorite parts to write are when things go disastrously for the characters! I love a good catastrophe or argument, especially if it's funny. My books are all light and fun, so it's a nice change of pace to really put my characters to the test from time to time.
I love the tagline you used, "Sometimes an empty nest means it's your turn to fly." It's really a different perspective on that time in life than what a lot of society would have us believe. Did you set out to challenge that belief with this work?
Yes! I like to challenge the belief that women over a certain age have nothing to offer society. As we age, we see the main characters in our media (books, movies, TV) get younger and younger. I like to offer a narrative for women over 40 to show that we're quite vital, active, intelligent, and able to have adventures.
Readers love that your books feature strong female characters. Would you and your main characters get along?
Absolutely. I like to say that all of my main characters are just different parts of me, like facets on a cut gem. The first three books of the Midlife Elementals series feature three friends; from Luella, the classic sweet southern woman, to Rose, the cynical goth, to Pepper, the fiery mom... they're all a part of me. We would have great fun and probably get into some trouble, too.
